Statement
Maisie Lopez is a documentary photographer based in Bristol and London, England. Her practice focuses on the exploration of personal themes, traumas, and the complex emotions tied to her experiences. About to graduate from her BA in Photojournalism and Documentary Photography at London College of Communication, Lopez has developed a refined approach to visual storytelling. Her work is deeply rooted in self-reflection, as she addresses on issues that have directly impacted her, allowing her to create raw and emotionally charged imagery.
Her preferred medium is analogue photography, with a particular focus on medium format, a choice that underscores her commitment to a slow and deliberate process. This hands-on approach allows her to engage fully with each phase of the creation process, from capturing the image to the final print.
Lopez's work has been showcased in prominent venues, including the Copeland Gallery in Peckham and The Art House by Acrylisize in Bethnal Green. She has also been nominated for the Leica Oskar Barnack Newcomer Award 2025.
She has just finished creating a photobook for her new project, Good Grief, which explores the complex emotions surrounding the relief she felt following the death of her alcoholic father. This deeply personal project addresses the taboo of experiencing relief after loss, challenging societal expectations around grief and its emotional spectrum.
